After India recommended Pakistan be granted Test status in 1952, Pakistan enjoyed limited international success until the 1980s, when they became fixtures in the later stages of tournaments. Their first international trophy was the ICC World Cup in 1992, followed by the Asia Cup in 2000. Since 2009, they have won the T20 World Cup, the Asia Cup, and the ICC Champions Trophy.
ICC Test Championships were won by Pakistan four times in 2016, and Pakistan won the first Asian Test Championship in 1999. Pakistan has the second-highest win percentage in international T20 cricket with a minimum of 150 games played, the fourth-highest win percentage in ODI cricket, and the fourth-best win-loss ratio in Test cricket (both with a minimum of 400 games played).
As a result of terrorism and the war on terror, Pakistan has been plagued by security concerns and domestic instability, which restricts its use as a venue for international cricket. After an attack against the Sri Lankan national team in 2009, Pakistan did not play cricket in the country despite hosting the 1987 and 1996 World Cups (with the 1996 final played in Lahore).
Pakistan played one-day matches in the UAE until 2016 and Test matches until 2019. After improvements in security and an overall reduction in terrorism, international cricket resumed in Pakistan in 2016, coinciding with the debut of the Pakistan Super League.
